The Northern Explorer first heads to Crystal Cascades , a wonderful local secret of Cairns. A well maintained path follows “Freshwater Creek “ as it meanders through the rainforest. Birds and Butterflies are plentiful and gaze down upon you as you walk by. Fish and turtles can be spotted in the crystal clear water. Tracks and stairs leave the main path and take you to the waters edge. Pools and small waterfalls and rapids make a perfect scene to start the day. As this treasure is just outside Cairns , we will be catching the rainforest and wildlife as a new day dawns . Very tranquil.
After an hour or so, we head north along the Captain Cook Hwy which has stunning beach and ocean views . We stop for some photo opportunities at a lookout along the way before following the same coconut palm lined highway. Around 10 am, we break out a Devonshire tea at a lovely secluded beach. Here we enjoy warm scones with strawberry jam and cream with a cuppa.
It’s now time to get close with reptiles that are waiting for their Devonshire tea. We board a crocodile sight seeing cruise on the famous Daintree river. Bruce Belchers Daintree River Cruises . Your Captain of the voyage is very experienced with many trips under his belt. He is a wealth of knowledge about the wildlife in and around the river. If time permits, feel free to wonder amongst the tropical gardens and rainforest before we head to a private jetty. These cruises are for low numbered groups which give a more personalised and better informed tour.
After the hour long cruise , we begin to move back along the Captain Cook highway to another secluded beach where we enjoy lunch from a local café. Fish and chips or burgers on the beach. All ingredients are locally sourced and cooked on the premises. Plenty of shady trees to relax under on a lovely sandy beach.
After lunch we head off to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures where we will partake in a crocodile feeding lagoon cruise and can watch the Crocodile Attack show. Feel free to wander around the park and view the various wildlife at your own leisure or follow the wildlife keepers feeding programs.
